Waiting... fate of long time internet friend in Chile

As of lately we are unfortunately getting used to reports of earthquakes from around the world. I have always been fascinated with earthquakes in a morbid sense of 'what if' in the Chicago area. Screwed! -would be the scenario, as our buildings here are very old and not constructed for such events, as earthquakes do not occur here often. That being said, we sit on one of the largest, most prone to be devastated, fault lines in the world. Nevertheless, you go on, day to day, because there are other scary things we have to concentrate on such as taxes, putting up with annoying people and video games.

About 8 years ago, I started chatting with this random fellow from Chile on what was then, the most popular instant message program, ICQ. I remember writing him off at first, but he was persistent in communicating to me in an every so polite way. Over time, I let up my guard and started talking to him more and more. Months and then years went by. We got to know eachother further by occassionally sending letters over snail mail and video chatting while we both worked on our own projects at home. Virtually keeping each other company, another words. Recently within the past couple years we have been in less contact due to 'life', however always checking in with each other from time to time. Months ago we were excited for the possibly of finally meeting in person. Dres, as I called him, even named one of my hamsters after him, would be living for a year in Montreal on a college transfer program. I swore up and down that I would somehow manage my way over to visit him, as it is much easier and possibly cheaper to visit him in Montreal, Canada versus Santiago, Chile. Unfortunately, because of my typical financial issues, I wasn't able to do it. He just returned back to Chile last month.

Now, you should see my concern. Haven't heard a peep from him. Facebook friends are begging for a response from him, yet still nothing. I now find myself refreshing his profile page every few minutes as my concern grows and grows now that images and videos are coming in from the Santiago area of Chile. As well as, reports of the dead. I have no choice but to sit and wait. I do care about this guy a lot. By virtually knowing Dres, I have not only increased my knowledge and interest in a person, but also a country and a new culture.

I am now wanting to share some photos that he sent me, some pre-Facebook days, with you. Normally, I would ask permission, but this is just making me feel better at the moment to do so. As you can see, he is adventurous. After translating someone else's post on Facebook, I learned that he could be vacationing in a remote spot of Chile where he is normally communication-less. I put this location on a map that I am also uploading.

Until then I will be thinking of him, his friend and family (who I also feel like I know through pictures). Pray, cross your toes, whatever you do. Thanks!

The Scale of the Universe

Let's see if this works... very cool. The smallest to the largest! Found it via a Facebook post of Jeremiah Cohick.

Don't get me...

...THIS! Usually people post things they want or (wantee). I'm posting what I never want. Still can't believe people put money into this. However, I sunk tons of money into a Bea Arthur collection at one point so who am I to say!

It's my bag... baby?

Img_0006

I posted about this a year-ish ago, somewhere. I have this side-bag (some would say man-purse) that I bought when I first moved to Chicago 11 years ago and still use it today. However, it is disintegrating day by day. The worst part is that I want the same one and can't find it anywhere, because I assume that it is no longer in production. Then today at the ATM machine I find a sparkling brand new one staring right at me. I was so excited and couldn't wait for the guy wearing it to finish his withdraw so I could ask him where he got that bag! Unfortunately, when he turned around I saw his face and got all verklempt. He was adorable and I felt like if I asked him, he would think I was only hitting on him. Which of course, in hindsight, would have been fine. Damn nerves of butter. So, the saga continues...

Oh, that too... I don't have to sit at the work desk any longer!

Img_0005

I cleared a shelf so I can now have a standing work station. Geeky/jerky I know, but it makes me feel much better throughout the day having this option. My back and pregnant-esque stomach apprecaite it too ;)

Just wanted to share that!

Until next click,

Kev!
